Every year, the Theta Xi fraternity posts up on The Diag (Michigan’s quad) to protect the area from vandalism by rival Michigan State before the annual football game. The chapter was also supposed to work with its national office to find a better way to control alcohol distribution in the fraternity house. Theta Xi was founded at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, on April 29, 1864, by Peter Henry Fox, Ralph Gooding Packard, Christopher Champlin Waite, George Bradford Brainerd, Samuel Buel Jr., Henry Harrison Farnum, Thomas Cole Raymond and Nathaniel Henry Starbuck. The first graduating class, in 1845, consisted of 11 men. Upon returning to Yale, they organized a chapter. Sort of. Perhaps the founders were thinking the college’s curriculum would consist solely of courses on how to pronounce its name.

On the same night Edward H. Morrison was unanimously selected the first new member of the Fraternity, and was initiated eight days later on May 7, 1864. Before any bottle was opened, each man deposited on the table the keys and all other property in his possession which belonged to the society. This Ann Arbor institution—which, incidentally is not even the state’s largest college (that honor currently goes to Michigan State)—still possesses many well-guarded secrets and little-known facts. Often just called Michigan, the University of Michigan claims to have the largest body of living alumni of any school on the planet. The deadline for this was also April 21.

He approached his friend with the idea of forming a chapter at Yale and found him to be in favor of the idea. Peter Fox from Harrisburg, PA and Thomas Raymond, a “downeasterner” from Westborough, MA, together with Waite, were the only Founders from out of state. Brother Farnum was requested to act as secretary. He promised to do all in his power to help them obtain a charter. He is, in fact, Tom Goss, a research lab technician in the dental school, who just likes to play. It turns out, he’s actually a university employee.

The Fleming Administration Building, designed in the 1960s, is rumored to have been built to resist damage or threats from riots and demonstrations. When the process was completed the members assembled in the club room to count the votes.

Theta Xi was chosen because of the reported existence of a local society called Theta Psi at Yale. There’s more than studying happening here. That’s before he turned to the Dark Side, anyway. Theta Xi fraternity allegedly violated the Lehigh Code of Conduct again, according to the Lehigh Greeks blog. At this meeting the secretary was instructed to recall their petition to Sigma Phi and to inform them of their intention to form a new society. The center is made from heavy brick, and its windows are more like the slits you might find in a castle or fortress.

It was not until 1905 that Theta Xi began its westward expansion with the chartering of Theta Chapter at Purdue in February of that year, and Iota at Washington University in St. Louis a month later. Recruitment efforts that Fall increased their number to eleven. William H. Wiley, initiated as Alpha 11, had a close friend at the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale University in New Haven, CT.
