I have been trying to go Pilot during my time here and was able to score an 8/8/6 on my ASTB, but looks like the big navy wants me to be a submarine officer due to missing a good amount of "volunteers" this year. That being said, your performance goes beyond your grades. Just as important as being a good pilot is being humble enough to learn and being able to teach others. The longest time spent in a cockpit was the Air Force and I think the mission was something like 34 hours. Active duty gets you more flight time and more money (and probably more flight time in the short term) if you decide to stay until 20. USAF you can also rush a reserve/guard spot or go unsponsored sometimes easier than going AD(at least off the street). For every hour of flying we do during a training mission, there’s countless hours of preparation, rehearsal, briefing, and debriefing. It's the "good deal" of mil flying as you spend the first few years essentially full time then you can get to the airlines quicker and still fly mil essentially as much as you want. They did just change UPT.. but the change you reference is the change from UPT to SUPT which happened... well certainly not recently. Go to “Air warriors” online to look any of this info up. I spend way more time doing menial bullshit than flying so I think you'll be disappointed if you join only to realize that your time and career pulls you away from the cockpit more than puts you in it (like an airline would). I appreciate it, all the airline guys say guard or reserves is the way to go, but I wouldn’t at all mind active duty. The military has been advertising a severe pilot shortage for years.
